In today’s digital age, protecting our data has become increasingly important. With the widespread use of the internet, phishing attacks and data breaches have become more common. These threats can also target content linked to your website or email accounts, so it’s crucial to take preventive measures to ensure that unauthorised parties cannot access your data. One of the simplest yet most effective ways to secure your accounts is by choosing strong and secure passwords.
Creating a Strong Password
While it’s currently not possible to change the main account password directly within the cPanel interface (you must use the cPanel and Login buttons in your Rackhost account for security reasons), it’s essential to pay attention to the passwords you set for other accounts created within cPanel, such as email accounts, database users, FTP users, and WordPress accounts.
A strong password typically has the following characteristics:
- At least 8 characters long, though longer is always better.
- A combination of lowercase and uppercase letters.
- Includes numbers and special characters (e.g., %, @, #).
- Unique for every user and account to avoid compromising multiple accounts with a single password.
Using the Password Generator
If you’re unable to come up with a password that meets these criteria, the built-in Password Generator in cPanel can help. This tool generates secure passwords and is accessible wherever a password field is available within cPanel.
To customise your password:
- Click Advanced Settings to adjust the parameters, such as length and character combinations.
- Use the customised password provided by the tool.
The generator ensures that you can set secure passwords tailored to your needs while meeting best practice guidelines.
Storing and Managing Passwords
It’s essential to record your passwords in a safe place where you can easily find them later. However, if you lose or forget a password, don’t worry—passwords can be reset after logging into cPanel. The specific steps for resetting passwords are detailed in individual articles for each cPanel feature.
