How Can I Set Up Domain Records?

BasicsDomain

To manage the records for your domain, log into your Rackhost account and navigate to the DNS Zones section. Select the domain you want to edit and then click on Edit records.

On the next page, you’ll see different types of records, organised by category. Each category displays any existing records and their key details. Typically, you’ll need to work with the A, CNAME, SPF, TXT, and SRV records. From here, you can:
  • Create new records
  • Modify existing records
  • Delete records by clicking the red X

If you need to add or edit a record, a pop-up window will appear. Here’s how to fill in the details.

Enter the hostname (1), such as “www.” (in case you add new records it’s recommended to set them with and without the “www.” prefix to ensure visitors can reach your site both ways). Choose the type of record (A, CNAME, etc.) (2) and then enter the server’s IP address (3) where your website is hosted. Finally, set the TTL value to 3600 (4), which is the recommended default.

After entering the data for the records, click on the Create button (5).

Note: When you register a new domain, the default A record will point to the parking IP 91.227.139.235. To change this:

  • Click the Edit button next to the automatically created record
  • In the pop-up window, change the IP address (3) to your desired value (for Rackhost hosting, use the IP or hostname shown in your hosting details)
  • Set the TTL to 3600 (4)
Once the new records have been created, click Update in the purple box at the top of the page to confirm.

When adding new records or modifying existing ones, take extra care to enter the correct values, as incorrect settings could cause disruptions to your website or email service.

If you manage your domain through Rackhost, the system will automatically set the MX record when you add an email domain. For external domains, the interface will provide the correct MX record value to be set.
