What is Two-Factor Authentication, and Why is it Important?
Two-factor authentication (2FA) is a security protocol that requires two different methods to verify a user’s identity when accessing an online service or application. Compared to a simple password, 2FA enhances security by using two independent methods in the verification process.
The first factor is usually known information, such as a username and password combination.
The second factor adds an additional layer of security, often through a separate device like a smartphone, which receives one-time codes valid for a limited time or displays a confirmation pop-up to verify that it’s genuinely you attempting to log in.
Together, these two factors make it significantly harder for hackers or unauthorised users to gain access to your online account. Passwords alone are no longer always sufficient for security, and with two-step verification like this, online accounts and personal data are far more protected.
Setting Up Two-Factor Authentication for Your Rackhost Account
- Log into your Rackhost account.
- Go to the Profile Settings section.
- Download the Google Authenticator app on your mobile (for iPhone users, this step is unnecessary as iOS has a built-in solution). Any other app with a similar purpose, like Microsoft Authenticator, can also be used.
- In the Enable two-factor authentication section, scan the displayed QR code using Google Authenticator (in the app, start the process by tapping the plus icon).
- Enter the code shown in the app on the Rackhost page, then press the purple Enable two-factor authentication button.
Once the second factor is successfully set up, you’ll need the current code displayed in your authenticator app each time you log in. To disable 2FA, return to the Profile Settings section.
